What happened Utz potato chips?

Modern era – In the late 1980s, sales of Utz pretzels began growing by 20 percent annually and, by 1991, pretzel sales comprised almost 10 percent of total revenue. In the summer of 1992, Utz added a third pretzel oven and began baking pretzels around the clock.

By the middle of the decade, annual sales of Utz products topped $100 million and its employee base had reached 1,000. In 1996, the company celebrated its 75th anniversary. By 1999, a new public website also allowed customers to purchase Utz products for at-home delivery. As the 21st century approached, Utz employed 1,300 with annual revenues exceeding $150 million.

In 2004, sales reached $235 million annually, spurred in part by market expansion, a targeted advertising campaign in the New York City metropolitan region and a 2001 Consumer Reports taste test ranking Utz as the best tasting potato chip in the nation.

A 2010 plan to merge Utz with rival Snyder’s of Hanover was blocked by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. In 2011 Utz Brands acquired Zappe Endeavors and its affiliated entities which manufacture and market Zapp’s, Dirty’s and California Chips brand potato chips. This acquisition included Zapp’s plants in Louisiana, California, and Pennsylvania thereby making Utz a national snack food manufacturer overnight.

Management of Zappe remained in place after the acquisition. In 2012, Utz Brands acquired The Bachman Company with Utz buying the intellectual property rights, distribution and Ephrata manufacturing facility.

  1. The Bachman family would still use its Reading and Hyde Park Facilities under the name Savor Street Foods Inc.

  • In August 2020, Utz became a publicly traded company (ticker: UTZ) after combining with Collier Creek Holdings.
  • In November 2020, Utz announced it would acquire Truco Enterprises for $480 million.
  • In January 2021, Utz announced it would acquire Vitner’s for $25 million.
  • In May 2021, Utz has acquired the supplier Fastida Foods for $41 million.

What states sell Grippo’s chips?

CINCINNATI – Grippo’s is a small regional snack brand that is holding its own against monolithic national competition. The wallop of flavor from Grippo’s Bar-B-Q potato chips is a native Cincinnati flavor, just like chili laced with cinnamon or black raspberries in ice cream.

  1. The flavor starts as a texture, like soft crystalline dust, completely coating the round, flat potato chip and then your tongue.
  2. As the dust dissolves, it creates a rush of sweetness, immediately followed by a vinegar-tinged heat that spreads over the tongue, across the palate and finally over the back of the throat.

Salt is a surprisingly faint element, though it’s there, along with a faint earthy potato flavor. Of course, by the time the flavor of a Grippo’s barbecue potato chip has had time to fully develop, most people have already started eating the next chip.

  • The flavor haunts the dreams of many who leave the Ohio Valley and prompts them to go to Grippo’s Facebook page, asking where in West Virginia, or California, or Alaska they can find the chips.
  • The answer: available by mail order.) Some fans are prompted to write long blog posts or create fake commercials and put them on YouTube.

Grippo’s sends a lot of chips to the military overseas and, in return, gets photos of soldiers in Afghanistan eating Grippo’s. “We have a very strong following,” said Jerry Hawk, sales manager for the company. Like many iconic Cincinnati businesses, Grippo’s is a family enterprise that has stuck to its core business over the years.

  1. Founded in 1919 by Angelo and Emma Grippo, the company started by making ice cream cones.
  2. They added pretzels in 1923, and their loop-shaped pretzels appeared in 1930, made on a machine Grippo designed himself.
  3. They are still a signature product.
  4. It wasn’t until 1959 that potato chips were added to the lineup, with the barbecue variety coming along shortly after.

Their plant in Colerain Township, Ohio, employs 60 workers, with 20 more in distribution locally. Even as the snack business has gotten more difficult, they’ve turned down offers to sell to outsiders. The basic chips are still made with a simple, old-fashioned recipe.

  1. We just dig them out of the field, scrub them, slice them and run them through the fry oven for 5 minutes,” Hawk said.
  2. Though they sell plain chips, and have added flavors such as Sweet Bermuda Onion and Hot Dill Pickle; the Bar-B-Q is the bestseller.
  3. In the last few years, some Cincinnati restaurants have used Grippo’s to add local flavor to their menu.

Corey Ward and Trew Quackenbush of Tom & Chee developed grilled cheese sandwiches with various flavors of Grippo’s inside the sandwich, giving them extra crunch and flavor. “We used them because they’re a local company,” said Ward. “People definitely get excited when they see Grippo’s as a choice.” Their American cheese, bacon and barbeque Grippo sandwich is their most popular.

Are Lays or Utz better?

We tried three popular brands of potato chips to determine which one tastes best. We compared Lay’s, Utz, and Munchos — all of which are found in common grocery stores. Lay’s was the clear winner because it had a good balance of salt, grease, and crunch. Utz is a good option if you want to pair your chip with dip, as it’s less salty and thicker. Munchos are the perfect pick if you want a grease-free chip with a lot of flavor.

Nothing satisfies a salt craving quite like a handful (or bowlful) of potato chips. When that need for a crisp, crunchy snack hits, you’ll eat whatever is available to you at the time. But if you’re walking through the grocery store and restocking your supply, you may have trouble deciding which brand to buy.

Fortunately, six of my co-workers willingly tested potato chips to determine which one is the best bet. As part of an ongoing INSIDER taste test series, we put three popular brands of potato chips to the test to see which one satisfies your salt cravings the most. In the past, we’ve sampled everything from microwave popcorn to chocolate chips cookies to cheap beer,

The brands we tried were:

Snacks & Candy Snack maker acquires 21 DSD routes in and around Orlando, Tampa and Sarasota Where Can I Buy Utz Potato Chips Photograph: Shutterstock HANOVER, Pa. — Utz Brands Inc. has purchased distribution rights from National Food Corp. that will expand the snack company’s reach in the Central Florida region. The acquisition of 21 direct-store delivery (DSD) routes provides Utz with an opportunity to grow in the salty snack category across Central Florida, including Orlando, Tampa and Sarasota.

Florida ranks as the third largest state for salty snack sales, according to Utz, citing IRI data, In 2020, retail sales of salty snacks in Florida were $1.8 billion, increasing 7.7% over the prior year. Utz has a growing presence in the Florida region with 2020 retail sales of $48 million that increased 16.6%, according to IRI.

This represents only 2.6% of the Florida retail market, well under Utz’s national share average of 4.8%. Is Utz A East Coast thing?

Welcome to the final segment of our exclusive three-part series on iconic local brands. This series has explored the famous Smyth Jeweler’s billboard featuring Mr. Boh of National Bohemian Beer and Salie Utz of Utz potato chips. If you missed the first two articles, feel free to catch up before reading on read part one on Smyth and part two on Natty Boh,

  • In a nutshell, I’ve always admired the marketing strategy that brought these three brands together.
  • The billboard has been a part of Baltimore’s history since 2007.
  • How does Salie Utz fit into this marketing puzzle? After all, Utz is manufactured in Hanover, PA.
  • While that may not be too far off geographically, National Bohemian was brewed in Baltimore for over a century, and Smyth Jewelers recently celebrated 100 years in Maryland.

No offense, Utz, but how do you fit in? Let’s take a quick trip back in time to find out how Utz became the official snack food of Baltimore The following comes straight from Utz’s website: “The Utz Story begins in a small town kitchen in 1921. William and Salie Utz began producing Hanover Home Brand Potato Chips in Hanover, PA, in their summer kitchen, cooking about 50 pounds of chips an hour.

They sold those fresh chips to small local grocers and markets, primarily in the Baltimore, MD, area.” “In 1930, the first section of the Utz plant was built on McAlister Street in the rear of Bill & Salie Utz’s home.” The company continued to expand, adding new buildings, equipment and employees over the next several decades.

In the 1980s, Utz began serving customers in Virginia and Delaware and expanded to serve customers throughout the United States in the 1990s. “Today, Utz is the largest independent, privately held snack brand in United States.” Well, that explains why the chips are so popular here in Maryland (and up and down the East Coast).

  • That also helps explain why the MGH advertising agency chose Salie Utz as Mr.
  • Boh’s bride-to-be.
  • Utz is a staple here in Baltimore.
  • Salie Utz is as easily recognizable as Natty Boh, The Oriole Bird or Poe, the Ravens’ mascot.
  • Utz played to its regional customers, creating Crab Chips flavored with Chesapeake Bay Crab Seasoning that are to die for (I always thought they were flavored with Old Bay, but apparently that distinction belongs to Herr’s potato chips).

As we all know by now, Mr. Boh proposed to Salie Utz in 2007, and the couple were married in 2011. You can watch a 30-second clip of the courtship, engagement and nuptials here, Photo courtesy of TheEveningSun.com Just like Natty Boh, Utz made a move out of Baltimore that actually alienated fans, causing some to go so far as boycotting the snack altogether.

Is Utz a regional brand?

5. Utz Potato Chips– Hanover, PA – Family-owned Utz started off nearly 100 years ago in the backyard of a Pennsylvania family home. Today, they’re the dominant brand of chips from New York to Philadelphia to Washington, DC, along the Mid-Atlantic corridor.

The chip is a classic thin chip that gets the job done with great flavors. Flavor To Try: The Crab Chip The Crab Chip is the perfect example of Utz diversifying and bringing great, local flavors into the fold. Taking on the famoys Chesapeake Bay crab boil seasoning and slightly funky soft-shell crab brininess, these chips shine.

They’re light and thin but not so thin they lose all meaning. The spice is dialed into a pleasant heat that feels more like a powdered Bloody Mary than a bottle of hot sauce.
