What happened Utz potato chips?

Modern era – In the late 1980s, sales of Utz pretzels began growing by 20 percent annually and, by 1991, pretzel sales comprised almost 10 percent of total revenue. In the summer of 1992, Utz added a third pretzel oven and began baking pretzels around the clock.

By the middle of the decade, annual sales of Utz products topped $100 million and its employee base had reached 1,000. In 1996, the company celebrated its 75th anniversary. By 1999, a new public website also allowed customers to purchase Utz products for at-home delivery. As the 21st century approached, Utz employed 1,300 with annual revenues exceeding $150 million.

In 2004, sales reached $235 million annually, spurred in part by market expansion, a targeted advertising campaign in the New York City metropolitan region and a 2001 Consumer Reports taste test ranking Utz as the best tasting potato chip in the nation.

A 2010 plan to merge Utz with rival Snyder’s of Hanover was blocked by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. In 2011 Utz Brands acquired Zappe Endeavors and its affiliated entities which manufacture and market Zapp’s, Dirty’s and California Chips brand potato chips. This acquisition included Zapp’s plants in Louisiana, California, and Pennsylvania thereby making Utz a national snack food manufacturer overnight.

Management of Zappe remained in place after the acquisition. In 2011 Utz Brands also acquired the Wachusett Potato Chip Company in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, enabling the production of the Utz brand in New England. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2021 Festida is the largest manufacturer of tortilla chips for Utz’s On The Border tortilla chip brand. Utz acquired Truco Enterprises, a portfolio company of Insignia Capital Group. that sells the products under the On the Border brand back in January.

“We expect that this strategic acquisition will enable strong supply chain synergies for our On The Border brand and enhance our ability to expand both On The Border and other Utz Power Brands geographically in the Midwest,” Dylan Lissette, CEO of Utz said in a press release.

Hanover-based Utz Brands Inc. manufactures a number of brands including Utz, On The Border Chips & Dips, Golden Flake, Zapp’s, Good Health, Boulder Canyon, Hawaiian Brand, and Tortiyahs! among others. Utz operates 14 facilities in Pennsylvania, Alabama, Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Washington, and Massachusetts.

CINCINNATI – Grippo’s is a small regional snack brand that is holding its own against monolithic national competition. The wallop of flavor from Grippo’s Bar-B-Q potato chips is a native Cincinnati flavor, just like chili laced with cinnamon or black raspberries in ice cream.

The flavor starts as a texture, like soft crystalline dust, completely coating the round, flat potato chip and then your tongue.
As the dust dissolves, it creates a rush of sweetness, immediately followed by a vinegar-tinged heat that spreads over the tongue, across the palate and finally over the back of the throat.

Salt is a surprisingly faint element, though it’s there, along with a faint earthy potato flavor. Of course, by the time the flavor of a Grippo’s barbecue potato chip has had time to fully develop, most people have already started eating the next chip.

In the last few years, some Cincinnati restaurants have used Grippo’s to add local flavor to their menu.

Corey Ward and Trew Quackenbush of Tom & Chee developed grilled cheese sandwiches with various flavors of Grippo’s inside the sandwich, giving them extra crunch and flavor. “We used them because they’re a local company,” said Ward. “People definitely get excited when they see Grippo’s as a choice.” Their American cheese, bacon and barbeque Grippo sandwich is their most popular.

Why are Utz chips not sold in California?

A California man has filed a lawsuit against Utz Quality Foods Inc. for allegedly falsely advertising that its Dirty Potato Chips brand was “all natural” and preservative-free. Cyprus Hashtpari claimed in the suit, filed May 18, that the Dirty Potato Chips products contain “non-natural, artificial, synthetic ingredients and preservatives,” despite conflicting advertising on the chips’ bags. Representatives from Utz were not immediately available for comment Tuesday evening. The offending flavors named in the suit are mesquite bbq, jalapeno heat, sour cream and onion, sea salt and vinegar, funky fusion, cracked pepper and sea salt, pesto and parmesan and smoky chipotle. Hashtpari began purchasing the chips from local gas stations in Venture County, California beginning in 2013. He believed the chips were, in fact all natural and did not contain preservatives, the suit states. Had he known that was not the case, he would not have purchased the chips or paid as much for them, the suit states. Utz allegedly misrepresented its product and violated California civil, business and professions and commercial code, according to the lawsuit. Hashtpari and others in the suit are being represented by Barbara Rohr and Benjamin Heikali of Faruqi & Faruqi LLP in Los Angeles. They are seeking a jury trial.

Florida ranks as the third largest state for salty snack sales, according to Utz, citing IRI data, In 2020, retail sales of salty snacks in Florida were $1.8 billion, increasing 7.7% over the prior year. Utz has a growing presence in the Florida region with 2020 retail sales of $48 million that increased 16.6%, according to IRI.

This represents only 2.6% of the Florida retail market, well under Utz’s national share average of 4.8%. Over the past decade, Utz has been collaborating with Florida retailers to expand its presence and increase distribution, the company said. With this DSD acquisition, Utz will increase its investment in the Central Florida region and provide enhanced retailer support with increased distribution facilities and sales management, higher service velocity and an expanded route distribution system, it said.

The billboard has been a part of Baltimore’s history since 2007.
How does Salie Utz fit into this marketing puzzle? After all, Utz is manufactured in Hanover, PA.
While that may not be too far off geographically, National Bohemian was brewed in Baltimore for over a century, and Smyth Jewelers recently celebrated 100 years in Maryland.

No offense, Utz, but how do you fit in? Let’s take a quick trip back in time to find out how Utz became the official snack food of Baltimore The following comes straight from Utz’s website: “The Utz Story begins in a small town kitchen in 1921. William and Salie Utz began producing Hanover Home Brand Potato Chips in Hanover, PA, in their summer kitchen, cooking about 50 pounds of chips an hour.
